To the Cohort of 2024-25,

As mentioned in previous correspondence, we are giving you the opportunity to contact the parents of students with disabilities in your district directly, inviting them to participate in this year’s Parent Survey. The Parent survey consists of 14 questions and should take 5-10 minutes to complete.  The survey window is currently open and will remain open until June 20, 2025. This will allow you time throughout the school year to share the link at IEP meetings, Open Houses, with progress reports, etc. We encourage you to take every opportunity to facilitate parent participation.

In an effort to make the process of completing the Parent survey as convenient as possible, we have, in addition to the survey link, created a QR Code for you to share with your parents. Both options for taking the survey are included below.

If you have any questions, please contact Collette Sullivan, Federal Program Coordinator at colette.sullivan@maine.gov or 624-6689 or Julie Pelletier, Secretary Associate at julie.pelletier@maine.gov or 624-6652.

Thank you for your cooperation in making this year’s Parent Survey a success!

Sincerely,

York School Department recognizes its obligation under state and federal law to program for students with disabilities in the least restrictive educational environment. Toward that end, York school Department shall ensure that, to the maximum extent appropriate, students with disabilities are educated with children who are not disabled, and that special education, separate schooling or other removal of students with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only when the nature or severity of the disability is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.

All determinations regarding programming in the least restrictive environment shall be made by the Individual Education Plan and shall draw upon a multidisciplinary assessment of the student's needs. York School Department has available the full continuum of alternative placements when making placement determinations.

Child Find

The York School Department actively tries to locate any unserved children with educational handicaps who reside within the school district. We are interested in any children, age 0-22 who may have mental, emotional or physical handicaps. We may be able to provide services that could make a lasting difference for these children through referring, identifying and evaluating their needs. If you are aware of any unserved children, please bring them to our attention by contacting the York Special Education Department at 363-4303.
