Mentor Volunteers
Welcome to the York Schools Mentor Program
Would you like to work with the youth in our community? There is nothing like individual one-on-one attention to help a student achieve academic goals and set high aspirations for themselves. Whether the student's needs are social, emotional, or educational, your support and time can make a difference in this child's life and school experience. Mentoring can also make a difference in your life—a very positive and rewarding difference!
What is a mentor?
A mentor is an individual who spends quality time with a student. A mentor acts as a positive adult role model, a caring friend, and a good listener. This will help your student make a successful transition toward adulthood. The goal of the program is to build student self-esteem, inspire their hopes and dreams, and help increase academic achievement.
What background do you need to become a mentor?
There are many types of individuals that make great mentors. Our mentors have various backgrounds. Mentors may be retirees, professionals in local businesses, or community members.
The quality they all share is their desire to spend time with a student over the course of their schooling. They provide a positive role model for a student, which often enhances the student's chances for academic, career, and personal success.
How much time is involved?
We ask that mentors provide guidance and support to a student for one hour a week at school, during school hours.
Do you offer training?
We do. We will provide you with an orientation session, a school tour, training, and guidelines on how to be a successful mentor.
How do I get involved?
The Mentor Program is part of the York Schools Volunteer Programs. The program director recruits, interviews and places volunteers in the York School System with the concurrence of the school administrations. We invite you to fill out an online application and we will get back to you letting you know that we have received it and talk to you more about the program.
