Welcome to the York Middle School Tennis Program!  The new tennis program has been designed to be a co-ed no-cut activity for 6th thru 8th graders.  The program has had an overwhelming response in terms of students who have showed interest in playing tennis.  There are 34 students currently signed up to play tennis.  This creates some interesting challenges, but good challenges that we will find good solutions to.

We will be using the five tennis courts at York High School.  There are three courts by the main parking lot and two more up beyond the baseball field next to the track.  Players will take the bus from the middle school to the high school right after school.  The first three buses in each line go to the high school.  Players should use these buses unless the bus company/drivers assign you to a specific bus.  Players can be dropped off to practice by their parents.  However, players MAY NOT ride with a friend’s parent.  You may ONLY ride with your own parent.

Before setting foot on the tennis court for tryouts, each student will need to have a physical form updated in the nurse’s office and a permission form signed and given to the coach.

Getting changed for practice may be a challenge.  There might not be enough time to change at the middle school before the buses leave.  There is no locker room space available at the high school because of their large number of student-athletes participating in fall sports.  The best suggestion is to ask your teachers if you can change during recess and then you’ll be ready at the end of the school day to get right on the bus.

There will be a two-day tryout to start off the season.  After the tryouts, players will be split into two groups, the Wildcat Squad and the Blue & White Squad.  The Wildcat Squad will be made up of 10-12 players.  The Wildcat Squad will play Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  They will also participate in four scheduled interscholastic matches, two against Kennebunk and two against Berwick Academy.

The Blue & White Squad will play on Mondays and Wednesdays.  The Blue & White Squad will be an intramural type activity, which will include skills activities and competitive match play within the squad.

WHAT IS YMS TENNIS ALL ABOUT?
The York Middle School Tennis Program is dedicated to the development of student athletes in the lifelong game of tennis. The co-ed program is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It is a no-cut program and students of all levels of ability and experience are welcome to be involved. The main focus is to develop the skills of tennis in each player. It is also intended to develop attributes such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence. The program is held at the five (5) tennis courts at York High School during the fall. It runs for six (6) weeks, starting the second week of school and ending at the end of October.
