Congratulations to YHS BOYS TENNIS TEAM on a fantastic season!  After the Western Maine Quarterfinal loss to Falmouth, the team finished up with a record of 8-6.  This was the best season for boys tennis since the state championship season of 2000.  Congratulations to all players for their efforts this season!  With a full returning cast of players for next season, competition will be intense for the top seven varsity positions.

Congratulations to our team MVP, Aaron Waldman, and our MIP, Matt Campbell.

Western Maine Quarterfinal Recap:
The Boys Tennis Team gave a hard fighting effort in Wednesday's match vs. defending State Champion Falmouth.  Although the Yachtsmen secured a 4-1 victory over the Wildcats, York gave its all in pressuring the undefeated #1 ranked team.  Matt Campbell secured the 'Cats only point with a 3-set victory at #3 singles.  Aaron Waldman dropped a tight match at #2 singles, losing in the third set Championship Tiebreaker, 11-9.  Both doubles teams for York played excellent matches against two of the best teams in the Western Maine Conference.  Both matches were in doubt up until the final point.  Kudos go to #1 doubles William Webber and Jared Fitzgerald and #2 doubles Spencer Fountain and Jacob Horowitz for their tremendous improvement down the stretch.  At #1 singles, Zach Kofman caught the wrath of Falmouth's top player who has lost Monday in the singles semifinals.  Back at full health, the Yachtsmen's #1 brought his A+ game.  Zach gave a great effort and hit with his opponent at times, but experience prevailed and the senior ran away with the victory.

Although we would have liked to go farther in the tournament, we know we lost to the best team and we gave them a run for their money.  Thus ends the best season in York Boys Tennis since the state championship season of 2000.  The team's 8-6 record is the best since that year and proved this team is ready to take a step up to the next level and compete with the top teams for another state championship.  GREAT JOB TEAM!!!

Outstanding win on Tuesday with the 5-0 victory over Maranacook in the Western Maine Preliminary game.  This was York's first playoff win since 2001.  The prize is to travel today (Wednesday) to #1 Falmouth. The match will be played rain or shine.  If it is outdoors, we will play at Falmouth High School at 3:30.  If it is moved indoors, we will play at The Woodlands Racket Club in Falmouth.  That will be at 3:30 also.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
YHS BOYS TENNIS TEAM
First winning regular season since the State Championship year of 2000!
7-5 overall record and 5th place in the Western Maine Conference Standings!

Saturday's doubles tournament provided lots of excitement for the two doubles teams that made the trip to Waynflete's Fore River Complex.  The team of Jacob Horowitz and Mike Sheahan narrowly missed a chance to progress to the consolation bracket finals.  After losing to  Cape Elizabeth's #2 team in the main draw, 8-1, Mike and Jacob defeated Fryeburg's #2 team 8-2.  In the consolation semis, they had two match points at 8-7, but were overcome by Fryeburg's #1, 9-8.  Fryeburg #1 went on to win the consolation bracket.
Ironically York's #2 team of Corey Decato and Jack Carley lost to the same Fryeburg team in the first round of the consolation bracket, 9-7.  Corey and Jack ran into an excellent #1 Cape Elizabeth team in the main draw and were defeated 8-0.

Exciting match on Wednesday vs. St. Doms.  With three jv players inserted into the lineup, York pulled out a 3-2 and raised their record to 6-4!  The clinching point was won by the #1 doubles team of Spencer Fountain and Mike Sheahan, 7-5, 6-1.  Aaron Waldman secured a point at #1 singles with a convincing win as did Matt Campbell at #2 singles.  Close matches were contested by Jared Fitzgerald at #3 singles and by the #2 doubles team of Sean Walley and Jack Carley.

Congratulations to Matt Campbell for his victory in his opening match of the MPA Singles Tournament.  Matt defeated Greely's #3 player 8-2 in the first round.  Ironically Matt defeated the same player that afternoon in a critical match vs. Greely.

The boys tennis team earned a hard fought 3-2 win over Greely on Monday afternoon.  That just might be the match that puts the team into the playoffs.  The win avenged a 4-1 loss to the Rangers earlier in the season.  Wins at #2 and #3 singles by Aaron Waldman and Matt Campbell and at #2 doubles, Spencer Fountain and Jacob Horowitz scored the needed 3 points for the win.

Monday's match vs. Cape Elizabeth was an exciting one for fans and players alike.  With the score at 2-1 with Cape in the lead, the #2 doubles team of Spencer Fountain and Jacob Horowitz battled to a third-set tiebreaker.  Having at least one match point, the duo was on the short end of a 9-7 tiebreaker score.  On the court next door, Zach Kofman was working his was into the third set with and 6-4 second set win.  Unfortunately Zach was taken over in the third set and lost 6-3.  The only point of the day for York was at #2 singles.  Aaron Waldman showed why he is  undefeated at 6-0 with a 7-5, 6-1 win.  The Wildcats are now 3-3.

York Boys Tennis

The York High School Wildcats boys tennis team is a varsity and junior varsity sport at York High School in beautiful York, Maine.  York High School is located just 1/4 mile from Long Sands Beach and the Atlantic Ocean.  The famous Nubble Light House is just a stones throw down the beach.
The Wildcats play in the highly competitive Western Maine Conference.  The schedule is challenging as is the travel, with many of our away matches an hour or more away.  The Western Maine Conference has a history of success in the state tournament.  In 2006, both the Class B and Class C state champions were from the WMC.  Falmouth was victorious in Class B while Waynflete swept their way the Class C title.  Then in 2007, the WMC had championship teams in Class B and C in both boys and girls divisions.  Falmouth repeated in boys Class B while Cape Elizabeth won in girls Class B.  Both North Yarmouth Academy boys and girls teams won state championships in Class C.
The York boys team has won five state titles in its history, with the most recent championship coming in 2000.  The program also found success in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1990.  The Wildcats were state finalists and Western Maine champions in 1992.
The boys tennis team has a tremendous history in the MPA singles tournament.  Capped by a victory in the championship by Todd Spelman in 1998, York has had numerous players make their way to the "final four" of the singles tournament.  Spelman earned his way to the semis three times.  In 1999, Spelman was defeated in the finals in three sets, and in 2000 he was defeated in the semis by a Chilean exchange student.
Dustin Freeman followed up Spelman's success by qualifying for the semis in 2001, losing to the eventual champion.   In 1996, senior Chris Forrest served and volleyed his way to the "final four".  Forrest dropped a heartbreaker in three sets to senior from Orono.  Forrest had one match point in the third set before having his string ended.
