Coach Pete Webster is a familiar face around the tennis courts in Maine during the spring high school season.  Webster has coached the York High School boy’s tennis team 13 of the last 14 seasons.  He led the squad to the Class B state championship in 2000 and was named the 2000 Portland Press Herald Tennis Coach of the Year.

Webster has also coached some of the top singles players in Maine during his tenure at York.   The top accomplishment of his players was the 1998 Boys Singles Championship won by Todd Spelman.  Spelman was just a sophomore when he upset three seeded players (all in the top eight) on his way to the title.  Spelman also made it to the finals his junior year and semis his senior year, losing to the eventual champion both years.  Webster has also coached two other players that made it to the state singles semifinals.  Chris Forrest achieved the feat in 1996 while Dustin Freeman made it in 2002.

Coach Webster is reviving the York Middle School Tennis program that had a very successful run through the 1990s.  Led by 5th grade teacher Gloria Perkins the program saw upwards of 60 players involved in middle school tennis.  Upon Mrs. Perkins’ retirement in 2000 and the middle school building project that took down the two middle school tennis courts, the program faded away.

Since then, three (3) courts have been added at the high school (the two damaged courts were repaired this past summer).  A renewed enthusiasm for the sport at the high school level (around 45 played last season) has led Coach Webster to reviving the program.  Since the middle school program is co-ed, both Webster and the high school girl’s coach, Mr. Norm Martinen, should see benefits in their high school programs for years to come.
