Homework and study guidelines from Frau Chappell:

I'm available at school for extra help from 7:30 to 7:55 in the morning. Students can usually find me in my classroom. After school, I'm either in my prep room or in my classroom from 2:00 to 2:30. My schedule changes every year, but you can also find me during lunchtime or during my free period.

I assign homework every class. In the lower levels, Level I and II, it is usually only a ten to fifteen minute written assignment. In Level III or IV, it is usually a reading assignment, a writing assignment, or sometimes both. On the off nights, i.e. the nights that the written homework isn't done, the student is expected to spend fifteen minutes studying the current vocabulary list. Remember, the more actively you are involved in your studying, the more you will remember. Study with a partner, ask your partner to say the English word. and you say the German word out loud, or write the German word down, like a practice spelling test. Read the word outloud, write the word down five times in a row. Make flashcards and use them throughout the day whenever you have five minutes. Don't ignore the vocabulary, just because you have done the written homework! In Level III and IV, students are expected to do the reading two or three times, at least. The more you read the passages, the more the German will stick in your head, and the easier it will be to answer questions and talk about the story in German! Your comprehension will increase every time you read the story!

Tests are always announced, at least two days ahead of time, as are quizzes. If you have problems with the homework, I expect you to come see me before the class, not in class! Learning a language is fun AND work, but it is not hard. You have to put the time into it, German is not going to get into your head through osmosis! I'm always here to help you!
