The Wiggly Bridge
by Greta Hayes

Since the 1930s, the Wiggly Bridge has been overlooking Barrells Mill Pond in York, Maine USA.   This small town draws in many tourists in the summer, and the Wiggly Bridge is a major attraction.  Located in the harbor, people of all ages like to fish and swim in the waters that surround it.  It also leads into a footpath through some nearby woods which are perfect for afternoon strolls.  As one walks over the bridge and the land around it, one feels as if one is being transported back in time to colonial New England.
As one walks over the bridge, it wiggles up and down, hence the name “The Wiggly Bridge.”  This name was believed to have been derived from a girl scout troop in the 1940s.  The bridge, at first glance, may seem very insignificant, as it blends in with the surrounding landscape.  What makes it special  is the fact that it is the smallest suspension bridge in the world.  Most things are judged by how big they are, but the Wiggly Bridge is unique due to its small size.   Smaller things in life are often overlooked, but this bridge should be considered a wonder.  It is like a miniature replica of some larger bridges in the world; the architect of this bridge was the same designer of one of the big bridges leading into Manhattan over the Hudson River.  Walking on it is like being a giant who is walking over a larger bridge.
This is a one of a kind structure that is simple yet, intriguing.  Smaller structures, such as this one, do not get enough credit.  Although it is not as ornate as some of its competitors, the Wiggly Bridge is still wonderful.  Therefore, it should be one of the new wonders of the world.
