Students in the York School Department will develop the essential keyboarding skills necessary to accurately and efficiently prepare a document. The success of any keyboarding program is measured by how students progress. Progress is measured by technique; i.e. correct position of body/hands, correct key stroking techniques (not looking at keys), speed, and accuracy. Students will practice proper keyboarding techniques whenever they are at the computer. Keyboarding is an important life skill. The York School Department is dedicated to teaching competency in
computer skills.
Students will learn and be able to do the following:
Kindergarten students will be introduced to various keys on the keyboard.
* Begin using correct posture
* Recognize letter keys
* Recognize number keys
* Introduce use of special keys (shift, return, caps lock option, shift/option, and delete)
* Use both the right and left hand to select keys
First Grade students will continue to practice recognition and use of various keys
on the keyboard.
* Use both the right and left hand to select appropriate keys
* Begin using correct posture, placing both hands on keyboard at all times
* Encourage use of more than one finger on each hand to stroke keys
* Reinforce recognition and use of letter and number keys
* Reinforce use of special keys (shift, return, option, caps lock, delete, and shift/option).
Second Grade students be introduced to home row instruction and encouraged to
use all fingers in word processing.
* Use correct posture with both hands on keyboard
* Introduce touch typing,
* Continue key practice in additional software applications
* Reinforce use of special keys
o Master the space bar and return keys
o Reinforce the shift, option, caps lock, delete, and shift/option keys
o Introduce the tab key
Third Grade students will continue to use correct posture as they master the keyboard using touch typing techniques.
* Use correct posture with both hands on keyboard
* Introduce additional keys
* Continue key practice in additional software application such as KidPix, ClarisWorks, or Writing Center.
* Reinforce use of letter keys and special keys
o Master the space bar, return, delete, shift and caps lock keys
o Reinforce the option, caps lock, shift/option keys and the tab key
* Process words at a minimum of 10 words per minute, with less than 4 errors.
Fourth Grade students will use the keyboarding program to expand keyboarding skills and provide practice lessons.
* Use correct posture with both hands on keyboard
* Student progress will be tracked
* Left Hand/Right Hand placement and usage on keyboard
* Letter Recognition of upper and lower case letters
* Number Recognition
* Keyboard Minimum 15 WPM with less than 4 errors
* Master special keys (space bar, shift, return, option, caps lock, delete, shift/option, and tab)
Fifth Grade students will continue the keyboarding program to reinforce keyboarding skills and provide practice lessons.
* Use correct posture with both hands on keyboard
* Student progress will be tracked
* Left Hand/Right Hand placement and usage on keyboard
* Letter Recognition of upper and lower case letters
* Number Recognition
* Keyboard Minimum 20 WPM with less than 5 errors.
* Master special keys (space bar, tab, space bar, shift, return, option, caps lock, delete, shift/option, and tab)
Sixth Grade students will be able to keyboard at a minimum speed of 25 words per minute with less than 5 errors using correct posture and keystroking.
* Use correct posture with both hands on keyboard
* Student progress will be tracked
* Left Hand/Right Hand placement and usage on keyboard
* Letter Recognition of upper and lower case letters
* Number Recognition
* Keyboard Minimum 25 WPM with less than 5 errors
* Master special keys (space bar, shift, return, option, caps lock, delete, shift/option, and tab)
Grades Seven-Eight
Standard 1
The student will demonstrate correct touch keyboarding techniques at the keyboard and use appropriate terminology to identify computer components.
Objective 1
The student will demonstrate eyes on copy, correct fingering, good techniques, and appropriate posture while operating the keyboard.
1. Feet placed appropriately for balance.
2. Center body to the "h" key with elbows at sides.
3. Sit up straight.
4. Curve fingers over the home keys.
5. Keep wrists off the keyboard.
6. Keep eyes on printed copy.
7. Key by touch.
Standard 2
The student will develop touch keystroking speed and accuracy. (Objectives indicate minimum achievement at the end of grading periods.)
Objective 1
The student will develop and improve keystroking speed and accuracy.
1. Complete a program of customized drills, exercises, and timings to reinforce touch operation of the keyboard and to increase speed and accuracy.
2. End of first nine weeks: Using 95% high frequency words (hfw) straight-copy material and 2 minute timed writings, key by touch at 35 wpm with 8 or fewer errors.
(Teacher may elect to use one-minute timings for weeks two through six: For one minute, key by touch 38 wpm with 5 or fewer errors.)
3. End of semester: Using 90% high frequency words (hfw) straight-copy material and 2 minute timed writings, key by touch at 45 wpm with 8 or fewer errors.
Objective 2
The student will determine wpm and accuracy level.
1. Calculate wpm on at least 10 timed writings.
2. Calculate accuracy level on at least 10 timed writings.
Objective 3
The student will demonstrate skill in using numbers, symbols and punctuation marks.
1. Key numbers by touch using the 10-key pad.
2. Use the fourth row to key numbers and symbols by touch.
3. Use appropriate spacing rules for numbers, symbols and punctuation.
Standard 3
The student will develop skill composing at the keyboard.
Objective 1
The student will demonstrate composition skills at the keyboard.
1. Key composition exercises from dictation.
2. Compose sentences, short paragraphs, and stories.
Grade 9
The student will demonstrate correct touch keyboarding techniques at the keyboard, improve speed and accuracy, and use appropriate terminology to identify computer components.
