YORK SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT
September 18, 2008
Dear Parents,
The priority of the York School Department is to provide for the safety and protection of our students. Examples of this priority include actions that we have taken in our schools to promote anti-bullying, Internet safety and the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. There are occasions when information is provided to us that we feel is important for parents to know, yet may not pose any immediate danger to our students. Our position is to inform and not alarm parents.
Toward this end, I want to bring to your attention a circulating email warning about a drug called "Strawberry Quick". "Strawberry Quick" is a type of crystal meth that looks like strawberry Pop Rocks, the candy that sizzles and 'pops' in your mouth. It smells like strawberry and can be mistaken for candy. It also comes in chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape and orange flavors.
We have been in communication with the York Police about this email information. It is important to know that there have been no cases of this drug reported in New England and specifically nothing like this has appeared in Maine. However, this substance has been identified as an illegal and powerful drug. You should be aware of this situation and talk to your children about dangers of accepting candy or any food items from unconfirmed sources. We will continue to monitor this situation at our schools and with the York Police.
Please feel free to contact your childís principal or myself if you have any questions regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
Henry R. Scipione
