In-Service Day
"Technology Supporting Instruction"
March 19, 2010
8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Based on feedback from last year's technology inservice day, the annual professional development survey, as well as meetings with building-based technology teams, the leadership committee and administrators, it has been decided to move forward with an  inservice day that will allow teachers to work together in groups designing technology-rich experiences for students.  The goals for the day include:

  • Provide quality work time for self-selected teams to create and develop technology-infused lessons/activities/units.
  • Help participants better understand high-quality technology integration.
  • Familiarize teachers with National Educational Technology Student Standards (NETS-S).
  • Provide time for staff to determine the technology integration level at which they are designing learning opportunities for students.
  • Provide a forum for user-groups and learning communities to access technology support structures.

Please read through the following agenda and contact your building administrator, technology integration specialist, curriculum or technology director if you have questions.

We hope you find this to be a valuable day.  Thank you.

Prior to February 12 (Pre-planning)

1 - Form your team!  Decide who you will be working with on March 19.  This could be members of your grade level, curriculum area, or just other peers with whom you would like to plan a lesson.

2 - Decide who will submit your plan for working the morning of March 19.  Each team will need to submit a plan to your principal(s), Curriculum Director and Technology Director.  The plan should be in the form of an email answering the following questions:

  • Who are your team members?
  • What student activity or unit will you design on March 19th? (ie - We will incorporate Podcasting into the Maine Animals Unit)
  • What skills will you need to do this project?
  • What members of your team already have the skills needed to undertake/lead this project?
  • What support will your team require from others outside the team to accomplish the task? (ie - we need to learn how to create a podcast)
  • Where will you be meeting/working on March 19?
3 - Decide which members of your team will attend optional breakout sessions (See below) in the afternoon.  This will be up to you.  Everyone will have the option of continuing to work in teams during the afternoon or attending one of eight breakout sessions.  Some members of the team may wish to continue working on an aspect of the lesson/unit from the morning, while other members of the team might attend a breakout.  This is up to each individual.  Indicate in your email who is going to do what.

Click HERE to open a form letter and email it to your principal.

Prior to March 19 (Resources)

In order to utilize the March 19 inservice day to its fullest potential and to maximize efficient use of time, make certain you familiarize youself with the following resources prior to your work that day:

  • Curricular content standards - these will be your starting point for developing an effective technology-infused lesson.  Think about what skills and objectives you will be asking your students to achieve.
  • Technology Grade Level Expectations - these are York's TGE's that will articulate what your students should know and be able to do with technology tools.
  • National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS-T) - these are broad descriptors and Performance Indicators.  These standards have been refreshed since York has developed the TGEs above.  These standards are more recent.
  • Technology Integration Matrix - The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students.  You will be using this matrix as a lens to gauge the level of integration in your unit/lesson.
  • Scenarios - Here you will find written examples of classrooms implementing refreshed NETS-S along with 21st Century Skills.

School Building Meetings
Principals - Introduction of Day's Schedule
All participants to view keynote address,  "Disruptive Innovations", by Scott MacLeod,
All particpants will post an on-line response to the keynote by the end of workshop day.  Responses will be posted to each school's respective News area in FirstClass.  Principals will select 7-10 representative responses and send to Gregg who will compile the messages from each school and post online so everyone can see what full K-12 reaction looks like.

Teamwork

By the end of March 26th, each team (one individual from each team) must respond to the following questions by completing the template below.  Click HERE to download a Pages document of the template.

  • Who are your team members?

  • Describe your project  (What will your students be doing?)
  • Grade level
  • Curriculum area
  • Describe any activities
  • Adopted curriculum
  • Articulate which content standards and performance indicators this project addresses.
  • Integrated Technology
Articulate which

and

this project addresses.

  • Performance Assessment
  • How will you evaluate student success on these standards?
  • Include the Criteria/Rubric you will use to determine successful completion of each task.
Send the integrated plan to Gregg who will post it online.  In this way, we will create a resource repository consisting of examples of best practice. The York Technology Plan states as a goal in the Professional Deveopment section that

Development of materials and best practices should be realized through:

- Collaborative materials creation
- Creation and implementation of curriculum-based units
- Publishing units online
- Sharing of materials and approaches

This will be one way of achieving that goal.
